The Scenario Training course, Rehab in Practice, was developed in 2009 as part of The Hong Kong Society for Rehabilitation's (HKSR) effort to improve patient access to rehabilitative treatment in China after the Wenchuan Earthquake ’08 and Qinghai Yushu Earthquake ‘10.

The program trains Chinese health professionals in rehabilitative treatment throughout 16 districts. By 2012 there will be a further 6 modules to this course, with a continually growing number of participants.

Challenges

• Shift the operational processes of Chinese health professionals
• Train cross-disciplinary health professionals with diverse prior knowledge
• Provide locally appropriate and sensitive training in regards to Chinese earthquake recovery
• Reach professionals over a large region, including in rural remote communities
• Engage highly busy professionals
• Change the culture of rehabilitation from a medical to a community model

Achievements

• Increased understanding and practical capacity to provide patient rehabilitation within a team context
• One program trains health workers from diverse backgrounds, disciplines and prior knowledge
• Country-specfic training that is locally relevant and sensitive for each region and workplace
• Delivered to 16 provinces through one online delivery
• High edutainment and interactivity motivated participant engagement
• Increased appreciation of rehabilitation within Chinese work culture, thus shifting current practices within hospital and community.
